Thyroid Disease Symptoms and Treatment — Interview with Elaine Moore

by Joanne

in Thyroid Disease

Elaine Moore is a medical technologist and author who was diagnosed with Graves’ disease after years of ill health. Following her doctor’s recommendation, she agreed to radioiodine ablation to destroy her thyroid tissues, and she’s never been right since. She regrets the choice she made and cautions others against quick fixes.

In this interview Elaine shares her extensive knowledge on:

  • What the thyroid is
  • Which hormones are created by the thyroid and how
  • How the thyroid malfunctions
  • Symptoms of hypo- and hyperthyroidism
  • Why goiters are formed
  • Why healing the immune system is paramount
  • The role of excess iodine as a trigger for illness
  • Inadequacies of diagnosis based on blood tests
  • Elaine’s personal story with Graves’ disease and its treatment
  • Dietary and lifestyle considerations in healing from thyroid diseases

The subject of iodine supplementation in thyroid health is very controversial, and you should thoroughly research this before embarking on such a therapy. You will find many doctors for and against iodine supplementation in treating Graves’ disease.

Elaine’s stance on iodine is that it is a known trigger for causing thyroid diseases and should be consumed in very small quantities. Dr. Brownstein, who wrote Iodine, advises that iodine supplementation in large doses is crucial to thyroid health. I will continue to research this issue and try to find someone to present the pro-iodine side of the debate. If you know someone, please let me know or have them contact me.

This was such a great interview for me to read. You helped me confirm that I’ve made the right choice ultimately to NOT take iodine. I use a fair amount of Celtic sea salt and eat fish on a regular basis. So my goiter is not resulting from too little iodine which the body needs in trace not mega amounts. Thank you for being so thorough and keeping us so well-informed!

Thanks, Lisa. I really enjoyed doing this interview with Elaine. I still need to supplement with iodine, since there’s so little in sea salt, but I’m taking only trace amounts.

I forgot to mention how I started using Lugol’s solution in my cats’ water bowl. I started with a single drop for a week, and then added two drops. One of my cats started salivating heavily and it lasted 16 hours with him leaving puddles everywhere. That was another tipoff that something just wasn’t right. Maybe his salivating didn’t have anything to do with the iodine. But maybe it did.

I’m still on the fence about iodine until I can do more research, but for now I’m erring on the side of caution.

This interview was really helpful. I’m trying to figure out what the truth is about thyroid treatments. It’s fantastic when it can be accomplished with diet alone. I suspect that my thyroid was in far worse shape back when I ate gluten. I recall a thinning of the outer third of my eyebrow back then, but no one ran the proper tests on me – no doctor seemed to notice (and I just figured I had overplucked! lol
