Why the Food Pyramid Can’t Be Trusted But Evolution Can

in Nutrition and Diets

With so much conflicting nutritional information today, people are very confused about what constitutes a healthy diet. If you were to listen to mainstream media and the medical establishment, you would think a healthy diet meant having whole-grain cereal, pasteurized milk, fruit, and orange juice for breakfast, a potato salad and fruit for lunch, a bowl of pasta, some vegetables and sourdough bread for dinner.

But these dietary recommendations have more to do with food lobbies than physiology. In today’s interview, Nora Gedgaudas, author of Primal Body-Primal Mind, talks about what constitutes a healthy diet based on our evolutionary history–a diet that promotes health for both body and mind.

We discuss:

  • Nora’s childhood interests in nature
  • How she became interested in nutrition as a field of study
  • The diets and lifespans of primitive cultures
  • Concerns with supplementation as a health strategy
  • What having a primal body means
  • The difference between produce we buy and wild, edible plants
  • Plant toxins such as solanin, goitrogens, and phytic acid
  • How the foods we eat affect our mental health
  • What foods contribute to poor mental functioning
  • The idiocy that is the food pyramid

Total time: 44 minutes.
